Episode 015: Affirmative Action Series: Part 3
(Conversation with Dr. Raquel Wright-Mair &
Dr. Gabriel Pulido)
In this final installment of the Affirmative Action Series, Krystle and Marlon invite Dr. Raquel Wright-Mair and Dr. Gabriel Pulido to discuss their research on “spirit murdering” in academia and its intersection with affirmative action. Dr. Wright-Mair conducts research that is grounded in social justice, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Her research agenda seeks to transform and advocate for the creation of more equitable and inclusive campus environments for underrepresented populations, specifically racially minoritized faculty members. Dr. Gabriel Pulido considers himself to be a transdisciplinary scholar whose research currently focuses on 1. Artistic Performance and Retention in Higher Education 2. Mentorship, Relationality, and Belonging and 3. Arts-based methodologies and activism in social science research.
In this episode they discuss:
The definition of Spirit Murdering
How minoritized faculty and students have to navigate constant attacks on their minds, bodies, and spirits as they navigate an academy not originally intended for them.
How the new legislation impacts social justice efforts and future funding.
